About Panerai
Founded in Florence in 1860 as a precision instrument workshop, Panerai supplied dive watches, depth gauges, and compasses to the Italian Royal Navy from the 1930s onward. The brand was effectively military-only for sixty years, becoming a civilian luxury watchmaker only after its 1997 acquisition by Vendôme (now Richemont).
The Radiomir (1936) and Luminor (1950) — both designed for the Italian Navy frogmen — define the brand's silhouette: oversized 44–47mm cushion cases, sandwich dials with luminous numerals visible underwater, and either a wire-lug strap (Radiomir) or a crown-protecting bridge (Luminor). The Submersible adds dive-bezel functionality to the Luminor case, and the Luminor Due offers a slimmer 38–42mm version for buyers who find the original case too imposing.
Movements range from outsourced ETA bases at the entry tier to in-house Manufacture Panerai calibers — the P.5000 hand-wound (8-day power reserve) and the P.9000 automatic — in higher references. Pricing typically runs $5,500 to $20,000.
